Homeschool Teaching Resources for South America
We “traveled” through South America, reading books, doing crafts, watching YouTube videos, and learning about these beautiful countries. We opted to just learn about the names flags of the smallest countries.
There are a few resources that we used across the countries, which were the country flags, a map of South America to label and color, and our “The Travel Book” (Lonely Planet) for country intros and overviews. There were a few countries, like Colombia, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil, that we opted to spend a whole week on, and for other countries we briefly covered them over the course of a day or two.
Venezuela
To study Venezuela we read two books:
We also used Cederhill Spanish Navidad Vol 2 Unit to talk about Christmas traditions in Venezuela since we were studying it near Christmas.
Colombia
Ecuador
We made Bolón de Verde, a fried green plantain fritter with cheese.
We read Tuki and Moka by Judy Young. In this story, a boy shares about going with his father to collect Brazil nuts in Ecuadorian rainforests and about his animal friends Tuki and Moka the tamarins. Later in the story he learns that poachers sometimes take the forest animals to sell as pets, so he has to be brave to help them escape back to the forest.
Peru
We learned about the Inca people and their citadel at Manchu Piccu.
We read:
We watched:
We learned about Llamas and their relatives, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas and how they were important for textiles. They were important to the native people of South America before the Europeans came and introduced other domesticated animals, but today they are making a comeback.
