Introduction to Australia

Summary Page: My family would love to travel to Australia. From Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter and “Izzy’s Koala World” to “Bluey” and our current favorite show the “ImBestigators”, TV has us falling in love with the land down under. Whenever we would like to know more about a place or a topic, we do a unit study, so we are currently going a “Bluey Study” as a playful a unit study on Australia.

We framed the study by weeks:

Introduction

Aboriginal Culture

European Colonization

Modern Australia

Watching Bluey

We are introducing various Australian animals throughout and watching Bluey episodes that tie into the days lessons. I agreed to let the girls watch a “Bluey” episode each day with school, if they can share one thing that a character learned during the show or one thing that relates to our lesson. Then I use the show as a loose Segway into our cultural activity for the day (i.e. “Bingo had a friend named Banjo and today we are going to talk about a famous Australian Poet named Banjo”).

Australian Food

Each week, we chose a snack, meal, or dessert (some of which were referenced in Bluey) to try from an Australian recipe. Here are some of the items that we tried:

Mini Pavlovas

Curried Sausages

Anzac Biscuits

Aussie Burger with “the Lot”

Some snacks that were inspired by the show included:

Toast with Peanut Butter and Banana (Bingo’s Favorite) or Cheese and Jam (Bluey’s favorite)

Asparagus

Edamame

Ice cream
